PUPIL PREMIUM 2019 - 2020

Pupil Premium funding is a National Government initiative to support disadvantaged pupils. Research shows that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds often face extra challenges that may prevent them from reaching their full potential in school. It is proven that a pupil premium child may not achieve in line with their peers.The funding is intended to support schools, in addition to their main budget to improve levels of achievement for all disadvantaged pupils and to close the gap between disadvantaged children and their peers.

 

Pupil Premium Funding is allocated to children who meet certain criteria:

  • If they are looked after by the Local Authority
  • If they have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point in the last six years (also known as Ever 6 FSM)
  • If their parents are currently serving in the armed forces
  •  

At Grove Primary School and Nursery, we will receive Pupil Premium funding totalling £130,000 for the 2019-2020 academic year. This is based on an allocation of £1,900 per looked after child, £1,320 per child who has been eligible for free school meals in the last 6 years and £300 for a child with a parent serving in the armed forces. Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium funding as they see fit. Therefore, at Grove Primary School and Nursery  it is expected that the funding will be used to support children who fall into this group so that they have every opportunity to make the same progress as their peers.  

 

For the next two years, we will be working with 'Achievement for All' who have already supported 4,000 schools. Through this programme we will address the issues faced by children and staff in key areas such as Teaching and Learning and Wider Outcomes and Opportunities. To ensure that our Pupil Premium funding is targeted in the most effective way, we track the attainment and progress of Pupil Premium  children and this forms a regular part of the review process within school. We compare the progress of children eligible for Pupil Premium funding against their peers in school and nationally. We collect further evidence through monitoring activities such as lesson visits, pupil voice and by regularly looking at the progress shown in classroom activities.  By doing this we can judge the impact of our work and the level of success that our strategy is having on the children the funding is intended for.

We report termly to Governors on how Pupil Premium funding has been used and our link Governor, Mrs Whitehouse, meets Heads, children and staff to monitor the impact of Pupil Premium spending. 

 

Barriers Faced by Eligible Children

At Grove Primary School and Nursery,  we use the Pupil Premium funding to support children with a range of different needs. To ensure that the funding in a way that provides best value for money, we refer to the Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit that provides detailed research into activities that have the most impact on Pupil Progress.  We also ensure that the spending is linked closely to the School Development Plan. Therefore this year, spending will be closely linked to the development of staff to ensure improved teaching of targeted support, a tightened focus on improving outcomes in Reading in Key Stage 2 and improved learning behaviours within the classroom for individual children.

 

Other areas of spending will include:

 

  • Guidance from other agencies such as the Education Psychologist.
  • Individual Thrive support plans for identified children.
  • The development of the role of the EWO to ensure that the attendance of children eligible for Pupil Premium funding is consistent with whole school targets.
  • Pupil Premium children will have their needs clearly identified and the progress closely monitored throughout the school.
  • Ensuring that Teachers and support staff are trained in running effective interventions.
  • A high ratio of support staff per class in classes with a significant cohort of Pupil Premium children 
  • 1:1 daily reading for all identified children needing support.
  • Ensuring that more able Pupil Premium children are challenged and encouraged to develop a love of learning

 

How the Impact will be Measured

The impact of the funding will be measured by the attainment and progress of the children who are entitled to Pupil Premium funding throughout the termly and yearly data capture cycle. In addition to this, targets and actions identified with

Achievement For All will be monitored by teaching staff and leaders to ensure swift and effective impact.  The emotional and social welfare of the children is measured through Thrive screening and Thrive provision that changes according to the needs of vulnerable learners. We will also take feedback from the children and families themselves to ensure that Pupil Premium entitlement supports our whole school community.
