Focus text:

To commence our English learning this year, we focused on the text 'The Promise' by Nicola Davies. This book was chosen to promote to the children that everyone, no matter how small, has the power to transform the world. On a mean street in a mean city, a thief tries to snatch an old woman’s bag. But she finds she can’t have it without promising something in return – to “plant them all”. When it turns out the bag is full of acorns, the young thief embarks on a journey that changes her own life and the lives of others for generations to come.

As we explored the book in more detail, the children had the opportunity to embed learnt skills such as expanded noun phrases, past tense, first person and sentence construction into their writing. The children's end product was to write a series of diary entries from the main character's perspective, at key parts of the story.

Our next text took us on a journey to London, as we focused on the text 'A Walk in London' by Salvatore Rubbino. As lots of us had never been to London before, we took a virtual tour to see some of London's greatest landmarks ( Unfortunately for some of the boys, Wembley Stadium wasn't on there!

After we had taken our virtual tour, we explored and compared the places in our story. This book was interesting to us, as it told the little's girls journey around London through speech, and then used a range of compound and complex sentences to provide facts about each place. As we worked through this sequence, we explored these skills in depth, in preparation for our own writing.

Our end piece of writing was based on our school grounds, a place we know very well! We visited different places along our journey, before presenting both a narrative and some informative facts about each place.
