In English, we are currently using the book 'Dragonology' as our stimulus.

By the end of our sequence of learning, we are aiming to produce TWO double page spreads to present our findings - one about the Phoenix, then another about Wizards so we can see how we can transfer our learnt skills for a different topic.


Our writing aims are:

  • Use expanded noun phrases to convey complicated information concisely.
  • Use brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis.
  • Recognise vocabulary and structures that are appropriate for formal speech and writing including the subjunctive.
  • Use organisational and presentational devices to structure the text and to guide the reader.

Guided Reading

We are continuing to work hard to develop our reading skills. Each week, we are focusing on a new topic area, so that we can learn how to apply our Expert Tips in different contexts.


We are completing 'rapid retrieval' activities in every lesson so that we can quickly retrieve the information and find the part of the text that will give us the answer.


We are currently reading the book 'Holes' by Louis Sachar as our class reader.


Each week, the children will be issued with a spelling list, based either upon spelling patterns or challenge words from the statutory spelling list to practise at home. Every Friday, the children will be tested on these spellings and new spellings will be issued. A key part of the SPAG SATs is spelling, therefore it is important to start our practise early!



In Year 6, your child will be expected to understand and use the complete range of grammar and punctuation outlined in the National Curriculum. Their knowledge will be tested through teacher assessment, and through a grammar, punctuation, and spelling test that children sit in May.
